Learning Across Borders

From youth chess tournaments to university visits, our educational exchanges build relationships that last far beyond the classroom.

The Global Neighborhood Project helps create opportunities for cultural and educational connection between San Diego and communities abroad. Over the years, we've supported visits and introductions for teachers, chefs, photographers, students, and civic leaders—from Azerbaijan and Mongolia to Latvia, Romania, and Botswana.

These engagements have included classroom visits, civic meetings, informal tours, and collaborations with local universities and cultural organizations. Each exchange is shaped by the interests of our partners and guided by a spirit of curiosity and mutual respect.

GNP also supports student enrichment through cultural events like the San Diego–Baku Youth Chess Tournament, now in its seventh year. Sponsored by the Republic of Azerbaijan, the tournament brings young players in San Diego together for a day of friendly competition and international goodwill.

Why support education abroad?

Because real understanding begins when students and leaders share space, exchange ideas, and learn directly from one another.
